Judson Studios in Highland Park, Los Angeles, has been making stained glass for churches and temples both secular and religious for well over a century. Founder William Lees Judson, inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement of his native England, was one of cofounders of the Arroyo Guild, an influential group of Southern Californian artisans. He also founded the Los Angeles College of Fine Arts — which later became the University of Southern California College of Fine Arts — in the original studio, a shared space frequented by artists, craftspersons and architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, whose Hollyhock House features leaded glass, pictured above, by Judson Studios.
The present studio, in operation since 1920, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. We’re proud to work with the present generation of artisans at Judson Studios, who are creating custom stained glass for Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles.

Cool news .

ok, you know, possibly, that i love old l.a motels.
and i have this dream of buying an old motel with david lynch and turning it into an art space where each room is it’s own tiny gallery.
here’s hoping.
in the meantime here’s an old l.a motel.

it’s actually not that old (maybe late 50’s? early 60’s?).
and architecturally it’s nothing to write home about.
but THE SIGN.
as far as l.a motel signs go this one is the ne plus ultra, the zenith of l.a motel signs.
and:

a.it’s gigantic.
b.it’s falling apart.
c. it’s amazing.

so, the motel itself just kind of looks like the motel in ‘breaking bad’ where hank teaches walt jr about prostitution.
but the sign is amazing.

and i think the sign is based around a surfboard motif. or a jungle shield.
which is odd as it’s about 30 miles from the beach and about 8,000 miles from the jungle.
oh well.

thanks

Pages of Florencio Zavala’s sketchbook — Flo’s teaching an illustration workshop this weekend at Summer School starting today, our semi-biannual art-making-while-imbibing situation at Ace Palm Springs. School Night Los Angeles is bringing down a bunch of great people to give workshops by the pool. All of this is going down during AfterFest, our concomitant nightly fête running throughout the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Making things is really fun, and so is watching things — it all begins this evening. Let us join together in holy lounging.

Looking forward to next weekend @ PSIFF AfterFest. #desertnights
